Opus 5 vs Fable 5: Which Claude Model Fits the Job?

When two AI models are both described as powerful, choosing between them can get confusing pretty quickly.

That is the case with Claude Opus 5 vs Fable 5. Both are built for demanding work, both can handle complex tasks, and both are aimed at people who expect more from an AI model than a quick answer to a simple question.

But they are not really designed for the same kind of work.

Fable 5 is Anthropic’s Mythos-level model for the hardest knowledge and coding problems. Opus 5 delivers near-frontier capability optimized for everyday and agentic work, at half Fable 5’s price.

So, rather than asking which one is better, it makes more sense to ask which one fits the job.

Fable 5 Is Made for the Hardest Problems

Anthropic describes Fable 5 as a Mythos-level model that has been made safe for general use.

That is probably the easiest way to understand where it fits.

Fable 5 is designed for complex, multi-step work where raw intelligence and reliable decision-making both matter. It is built to hold and process large amounts of information across long task sequences, and it is optimized for calling external tools, APIs, and orchestrating multi-step workflows.

That matters for certain types of work.

In software development, for example, Fable 5 is highlighted for very large migrations, complex implementations, and other high-stakes engineering tasks. It can also write tests for its own work and use vision to compare its output with an intended design.

Its vision capabilities extend beyond coding too. The model can work with diagrams, charts, and tables in files and PDFs, which could be useful in areas such as finance, legal work, analytics, and architecture.

This is where Fable 5 starts to justify its position.

It is not simply about answering a difficult question. It is about taking on some of the most challenging tasks and staying with them.

Opus 5 Is About Getting More Done for Less

Opus 5 takes a slightly different approach.

Anthropic describes Opus 5 as “a step-change improvement for the Opus tier powering long-running agents while delivering improvements in coding and professional work.” It is also considerably cheaper than Fable 5.

Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Fable 5 costs $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.

Those prices come directly from Anthropic’s published information.

So, at the base token rates, Fable 5 costs twice as much.

That difference might not mean much if you are using an AI model occasionally. For businesses, developers, or applications processing large amounts of information, however, the cost can add up quickly.

The interesting part is that Anthropic does not position Opus 5 as a major step down in capability to achieve that lower price.

In its published evaluations, Anthropic reports strong results for Opus 5 across coding, knowledge work, problem solving, and computer use.

For example, on Frontier-Bench v0.1, published comparisons show Opus 5 scoring 43.3% versus 33.7% for Fable 5, while costing half as much per token. Those figures come from Anthropic’s own evaluation results and should be read as vendor-reported benchmark results rather than a universal guarantee of how the models will perform for every user.

Still, they tell us something important about Opus 5’s intended position.

It is not meant to be the “cheap option”.

It is meant to be a highly capable option that happens to cost less.

Coding Is a Good Example

Coding is probably one of the clearest areas where the difference becomes interesting.

Fable 5 is designed for large and complicated development projects. If a team wants an AI model to work through a major migration or spend a long period working autonomously on very hard problems, those are exactly the situations Anthropic highlights for Fable 5.

Opus 5, meanwhile, puts a lot of emphasis on software engineering efficiency and agentic workflows.

Anthropic reports that Opus 5 performs particularly strongly on software engineering evaluations. On Frontier-Bench v0.1, the company says it surpasses the other models tested and more than doubles the performance of Opus 4.8 at a lower cost per task.

There is another interesting detail here.

Anthropic says Opus 5 can verify its own work and continue iterating until it succeeds. In principle, a proactive model like Opus 5 could, for example, be given an image of a machine part with no direct access to the drawing, then create its own computer vision pipeline, extract the geometry from the image data, and reconstruct the part as a 3D FreeCAD model. That kind of behaviour illustrates what Anthropic means when it describes Opus 5 as more proactive.

Fable 5 Still Has Its Place

It would be misleading to turn all of this into “Opus 5 wins”.

Anthropic itself makes clear that Fable 5 remains the model for its most ambitious work.

Opus 5 also remains behind Mythos 5 in some areas, particularly biology research and offensive cybersecurity capabilities.

Fable 5 has more restrictive cybersecurity safeguards than Opus 5. For flagged Opus 5 requests, Anthropic says Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork can automatically fall back to Opus 4.8.

Opus 5 takes a somewhat different approach to safeguards. Its cybersecurity classifiers are less restrictive than Fable 5’s in some areas, allowing more types of security-related work while still blocking clearly dangerous requests.

Again, those safety behaviours are based on Anthropic’s own testing and documentation, not an independent industry-wide measurement.

So, Which One Should You Pick?

For many developers, businesses, and everyday users, Opus 5 is probably the more practical starting point.

You get a highly capable model for coding, analysis, research, and other professional tasks, while paying half of Fable 5’s base token price.

Fable 5 makes more sense when the project itself is unusually demanding. If you are dealing with a long-running research task, a major software project, or work that needs extensive planning, autonomy, and the highest available capability, its design is much more closely aligned with those requirements.

There is no need to declare one model the universal winner.

Opus 5 is designed for everyday use. Fable 5 is built to take on the jobs that are harder to hand off.

And that is probably the most useful way to look at the comparison.

The best AI model is not necessarily the one with the biggest capabilities on paper. It is the one that fits the work you actually need it to do.
