You have a website, the pages are live, and you can open everything yourself. So why doesn&#8217;t it show up when you search for your business?<\/p><p>The answer is that putting a website online and getting it into Google&#8217;s search results are two different things.<\/p><p>Google first needs to discover your website, understand its pages, and decide which ones should be included in its index. Only then can those pages start appearing in search results.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-google-discovers-websites\"><strong>How Google discovers websites<\/strong><\/h2><p>Google uses automated crawlers to find pages on the internet. These crawlers follow links between websites and pages, which allows Google to discover new content.<\/p><p>For example, if another website links to your website, Google can follow that link and discover your pages.<\/p><p>Your website can also be discovered through an XML sitemap. A sitemap gives search engines a list of the pages you want them to know about. Most websites can generate one automatically.<\/p><p>If your website is new, submitting your sitemap through Google Search Console is a good place to start.<\/p><p>It doesn&#8217;t guarantee rankings, but it gives Google another way to find your pages.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-being-found-doesn-t-mean-ranking\"><strong>Being found doesn&#8217;t mean ranking.<\/strong><\/h2><p>This is where SEO can get confusing.<\/p><p>Google discovering your website doesn&#8217;t mean it will appear at the top of the results.<\/p><p>First, Google needs to crawl a page. It then decides whether to index it. Once a page is indexed, it can appear in search results when Google thinks it is relevant to someone&#8217;s search.<\/p><p>Ranking is a separate issue.<\/p><p>For example, you could have a page about software development that Google has indexed, but that page might still be on page five for a competitive search term.<\/p><p>That&#8217;s because Google has to decide how useful and relevant your page is compared with all the other pages covering the same subject.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-make-your-website-easy-to-understand\"><strong>Make your website easy to understand<\/strong><\/h2><p>One of the simplest things you can do is explain what your business actually does.<\/p><p>This sounds obvious, but some websites make it surprisingly difficult.<\/p><p>A homepage might have a large headline about \u201ccreating possibilities\u201d or \u201cbuilding the future\u201d, but never clearly explain what the company offers.<\/p><p>A visitor shouldn&#8217;t have to work it out.<\/p><p>If you develop software, make that clear. The same goes for accounting services, where it helps to specify what you offer, or for products, where visitors should immediately understand what you sell.<\/p><p>The same applies to individual pages.<\/p><p>A service page should explain the service, who it is for, and what the customer can expect. A blog should actually answer the question it is written about.<\/p><p>Clear information makes your website easier for people to use and gives Google a better idea of what each page is about.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-your-pages-should-connect\"><strong>Your pages should connect.<\/strong><\/h2><p>Internal links are another simple part of a website that often gets overlooked.<\/p><p>If you have a blog post about SEO and you also have a page about your SEO services, it makes sense to connect them.<\/p><p>The same goes for case studies, service pages, and related articles.<\/p><p>This helps visitors find more relevant information without having to return to Google every time they want to go somewhere else.<\/p><p>It also gives Google a better understanding of the relationship between the pages on your website.<\/p><p>You don&#8217;t need to add links everywhere. Just connect pages where there is a genuine reason to do so.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-google-search-console\"><strong>Use Google Search Console<\/strong><\/h2><p>If you want to know whether Google is actually finding your website, Google Search Console is one of the most useful places to check.<\/p><p>It can show you which pages Google has indexed and whether there are problems preventing certain pages from being indexed.<\/p><p>This is particularly useful for a new website.<\/p><p>You might discover that a page is blocked from being crawled, that Google hasn&#8217;t indexed it yet, or that there is another technical issue that needs fixing.<\/p><p>Without Search Console, you might spend days wondering why a page isn&#8217;t appearing.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-you-put-on-the-page-still-matters\"><strong>What you put on the page still matters<\/strong><\/h2><p>Getting Google to discover your website is only the beginning.<\/p><p>Your content matters once Google starts looking at your pages.<\/p><p>This doesn&#8217;t mean filling your website with keywords. In fact, repeating the same phrase over and over can make a page harder to read without making it more useful.<\/p><p>Instead, explain things properly.<\/p><p>If you&#8217;re writing about a service, explain what it does and why it might be useful. When answering a question, get straight to the point and provide a clear answer. For a case study, focus on the problem and how it was solved.<\/p><p>Good SEO starts with useful information.<\/p><p>There are plenty of technical things that can be improved later, but no amount of optimisation can turn a page with very little useful information into a great result.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-give-google-time\"><strong>Give Google time<\/strong><\/h2><p>If you have just launched a website, don&#8217;t expect everything to happen immediately.<\/p><p>Google needs to discover your pages, crawl them, and process the information before they can start appearing in search results. How quickly that happens can vary.<\/p><p>Once your website is live, make sure Google can access it, submit your sitemap, check Search Console, and keep adding useful content.<\/p><p>Then give it some time.<\/p><p>Getting your website onto Google isn&#8217;t really about finding one trick that makes it appear overnight.
